Engage and Connect Worthing
In 2017-2018 we undertook a pilot in Worthing for long term befriending in partnership with the Community Referrers and the Charity, Guildcare. The pilot was developed in response to research we undertook in partnership with Sussex Police mapping out where the highest risk areas for isolation among older people (using Age UK heat map data and SCAM fraud data), across Sussex. Unsurprisingly, Worthing along with Brighton and Hove (where we have been established as key befriending providers for the past 5 years) were in the top 5 highest risk areas of need, hence the pilot and the subsequent launch of our service in Worthing in May 2019.
Thanks to recently receiving lottery funding we are now able to provide the following service in Worthing which includes all the areas in and around; east Worthing, west Worthing, central Worthing, Findon Valley, High Salvington, Goring By Sea, Durrington, and Ferring. At Time to Talk Befriending in Brighton and Hove, we have developed a model that can be replicated and over time we hope to reach other communities (Adur being a top priority). For now however, we are concentrating on providing the following in the area of Worthing (as outlined above).
- Referrals for befriending for anyone aged 65+ who goes for long periods of time with minimal human contact.
- Assessment and review processes enabling older people to benefit from one to one long term befriending, be supported to access other services/activities/groups of interest, attend intergenerational group befriending (which we hope to develop by October 2019) and benefit from our Christmas outreach (Christmas meal delivery and befriending on Christmas day).
