Thinking of you at Christmas
Christmas can be a very lonely time, especially for older people who have lost their loved ones and have been left as orphans or widows alone in the world so at Time to Talk Befriending we reach out and support older people who feel lonely during the festive season.
We have been running our ‘Thinking of you at Christmas’ campaign on a small scale in Brighton and Hove since 2014. We were awarded the accolade of ‘Best Partnership and Collaboration’ by Community Works in 2016 for our work. There are so many older people living in our neighborhoods who feel alone and forgotten that would benefit from being connected to our service. We aim to ‘honour our elders’, connect people together and engage with individuals to reduce feelings of chronic loneliness.
In 2017 we provided 120 Christmas meals across Brighton and Hove and Lancing. The meals were lovingly prepared by local Food & Consumer Expert and ‘Chef to the Stars’, Kate Moore. We recruited over 100 volunteer befrienders including families, who not only delivered the special meals and helped heat them, but they provided befriending to people who would otherwise feel completely isolated, invisible and alone. Every year local primary schools join our campaign to produce personalised cards which is a way of honouring our elders and reminding them that they are being thought about at Christmas.
