We have had to adapt the way in which we operate to meet the growing need for telephone befriending for older people during the COVID19 pandemic. The majority of our scheme members are aged 80+ and most are living with long term health conditions. For many of our scheme members, our volunteers are their only social contact.
We have adapted the way in which we process referrals and we continue to work towards improving and streamlining the process (it is currently a work in progress!).
To enable us to continue to support those most in need of companionship we are only taking referrals for people aged 65+ living in Brighton and Hove, Adur or Worthing. Our criteria is that the person being referred has minimal existing social connections. The reason for keeping to these areas is because we will eventually offer ongoing opportunities for engagement, connection and friendship face to face as well as over the phone once the pandemic has come to an end. If we spread ourselves too wide geographically we wont be able to offer the personalised service that we pride ourselves on and for which we have been awarded an accreditation of ‘excellence’ the by the national governing body Befriending Networks.
