Volunteering

We have had to adapt the way we operate to enable us to meet the growing need for telephone befriending for older people. The majority of our scheme members are aged 80+ and most are living with long term health conditions. For many of our scheme members our volunteers are their only social contact so your role as a befriender is of huge importance.

We have adapted the way in which we undertake recruitment to meet the requirements to stay socially distanced and we are working hard to further streamline the process (it’s a work in progress!).

To enable us to continue to meet the need to reduce loneliness and social isolation after the COVID19 pandemic has come to an end, we are looking for volunteer telephone befrienders in Brighton and Hove, Adur and Worthing at this time. The reason for this is because we will eventually offer ongoing opportunities for engagement, connection and friendship face to face as well as over the phone once the pandemic has come to an end. If we widen our geographical network we won’t be able to offer the personalised service that we pride ourselves on and for which we have recently been awarded an Excellence accreditation by the national governing body Befriending Networks.

So if you live in the areas in which we operate in Sussex, below are links to our application forms. By joining the team you truly can help us make a difference even though we are all socially distanced at this time.

If you live elsewhere in the Country you can either contact Age UK Call in Time, Silverline or Befriending Networks to find out about opportunities in your area. Links at the bottom of the page for your information.
